also became the youngest american in space during her first mission aboard the space shuttle "challenger". ride flew a second "challenger" mission the following year and later made it her mission to inspire young people, especially girls to do well in math and science. sally ride was 61 years old. and now here's a look at some other stories making news early today in america. in new jersey there was drama at a car wash after an elderly woman apparently hit the gas instead of the brakes, lost control of her car, and then drove right into the river. well, the car wash workers rushed to help, jumping into the water and pulling the woman out of the window because the water pressure blocked the doors from being open. the victim is calling the car wash attendants heroes. in utah police were stunned by this accident. they say a 16-year-old girl crashed her mother's car. it wound up plunging down an embankment, slamming into the

patio of an office building at about a 45-degree age gel. amazingly the girl walked away with only a sprained ankle. in southern california, a big surprise for a group of friends out fishing in the pacific ocean. look at that. an orca swam up and just started hanging out. the whale could be seen above and below the surface and tried following the boat when it left. beautiful, isn't it? and finally in california, amazing and beautiful images from a spectacular lightning storm in the sacramentoal area. fire officials reported more than 2,000 lightning strikes, some of them which caused a number of small fires. and now for a look at your national and regional weather, here is nbc's bill karins. he has your weather for you. good morning, bill. >> i'm a sucker for the lightning photos. they're just beautiful. >> you can tweet those, bill, to many, many followers. good morn, everyone. there's a lot more lightning strikes than the ones we just showed you.

we have some in minnesota, wisconsin, and heading toward new england. thunderstorms are rolling right along the mass pike on interstate 90 and they're heading through areas right almost along the outside loop of 495. notice they already kicked through springfield. now they're heading right where 395 meets 90 and they look like they'll be from boston southward. the other area, a lot of storms. this is just the begins of a veryive day today. just to the south side of minneapolis. look how long this line is. it goes from st. cloud all the way down to rochester. lacrosse just got hit by storms and now these are trying to push down toward madison, wisconsin, and eventually that stormy weather is going to work its way back into chicago, indiana, and kentucky later on today. the other story, of course, the heat. t the cold front has nod made its way to the west. brutal in much of kansas, missouri, and oklahoma. humidity is up too. be ready for that. that's a look at the national

good morning and welcome back to "early today." i'm lynn berry, and here are some of your top headlines this morning. and now here is an early the government of syrian president back here al assad says it could use chemical 'gregss. saying assad would be held accountable if he made the, quote, tragic mistake of using chemical weapons. in pakistan nine suspected militants were reportedly killed in drone missile attacks. the missile attacks were on a compound near the afghan border. navy investigators say a civilian laborer set the fire that caused $400 million in damage to a dplier powered submarine this spring. fishlgs say the worker set the fire because he had anxiety and wanted to get out of work early. and as a rule no one is allowed to kiss the queen of

england but a couple did just yesterday but it turns out that because it was the king and queen elizabeth of greece who are related to prince philip, therefore, they are allowed to kiss the queen. and now here is an early look at how wall street's going to kick off the day. the dow opens at 12,721 after fall 1g 01 points yesterday. the s&p sank 12. the nasdaq tumbled 35. taking a look at oversea s trading this morning, in tokyo the nikkei was down 20 while in hong kong the hang seng skidded 150. renewed worries that spain may need a bailout sent global markets skidding monday. safety seekers pushed bond yields trord lows. more bad news came after the bale when moody's lowered the outlook of germ niece aaa rating from negative to stable. the global selloff also hit commodities. oil prices slid 4% settling just above $88 a barrel.

good morning. if you're just waking up, this is "early today." and in sports the ncaa sanctions handed down yesterday against penn state for the football program's recent child sex abuse scandal may not include the so-called death penalty, but there is little doubt nittany lion football will never be the same. here's nbc's mario solis with an early look at all your sports headlines. good morning. a day after penn state took down the joe paterno statue, the ncaa dropped the hammer on the school's football program. hitting the once proud school history with a $60 million fine,
